Features

What keeps it safe, and what makes it easy for the whole family.

Safety and privacy

  • A circle for every child

A child's guardians choose who is in their circle. Only people inside it can message, play or share with them, and our server checks the circle on every message, move and page.

  • No strangers, no public lobbies

No search box, no friend requests, no public profiles and no public game rooms. Each family's space is its own, and having an account never lets anyone see or reach your kids.

  • Switches for each person

Choose what each person can do with a child: messages, group chats, games, stories, notebook pages, pictures, seeing who's online and which times of day.

  • A safety check on everything written

Messages, story and notebook pages, game chat, names, whiteboard words, song names and code projects are checked in 16 areas, from cuss words and bullying to grooming, meeting in person and self-harm. From everyone, grown-ups included.

  • Floors nobody can lower

Grooming warning signs, meeting in person, self-harm and abuse always reach a guardian. No setting can switch them off, not even ours.

  • "I need help", always there

One tap tells a child's guardians right away, and the other person is never told. A child who writes about hurting themselves sees a caring message with the 988 line, and their message still goes through.

  • Pictures with a guardian's OK

Photos and drawings only work with people a guardian allows, and a guardian can choose to OK each one first. Web links are removed from any chat with a child in it.

  • No ads, no trackers

No advertising, no analytics companies, no data brokers and no outside scripts. Every game and book is hosted on our own server.

  • Our voices, on our own server

Talk to type and read-aloud run on our own server. Kids' voices never go to Google, Apple or any voice service, and a spoken message is deleted as soon as it becomes words.

  • Their data is yours

Download a child's data as a file you keep, or delete their account for good. Old chats are removed after a set time, and everything is backed up every night, encrypted.

Tools for parents

  • A page for each child

Today at a glance, who is in their circle, their messages, the rules, safety and their devices. Changes save by themselves, and the server checks every one.

  • The Rules tab

A daily time limit with +15 or +30 minutes for today, quiet hours for bedtime and school, which ages of games, apps and books they can open, single items to allow or hide, and a weekly reading goal.

  • Safety alerts you can act on

Anything flagged goes to a review list with the words that caused it, to mark fine or follow up. Urgent alerts come right away. When two guardians choose differently, the stricter choice wins.

  • Their week, at a glance

A weekly summary for each child: time used, reading, games with the circle, what they made, who they talked with (never the words) and any safety flags.

  • Hand your phone to your child

"Hand to Maya" turns your own phone or tablet into your child's for a while, with all of their rules. Your lock code, checked on our server, gives it back.

  • See what your child sees

Open your child's own Home, Play, Make and Read, in their look, without signing in as them. Grown-ups can also open every game, app and book to try it first.

  • Nothing hidden from you

Read a child's chats and notebooks as their age allows (every opening goes in an activity log), see every device they are signed in on and sign one out, and read everything an optional helper said.

  • Notifications you choose

A bell with everything new, and a switch for each kind of notification that may reach your phone. Urgent safety alerts always reach it.

  • Ask OllyOlly, for grown-ups

A chat helper that answers questions about the app and can prepare a change for you, like a new time limit. Nothing changes until you say yes on a card.

For the whole family

  • Who they are to the family

Guardians say who each person is (grandparent, aunt or uncle, cousin, babysitter and more) and choose the switches new people in each group start with.

  • A family calendar

Events with times, repeats and reminders. Kids can suggest an event that a guardian says yes to, and guardians choose who else sees the calendar.

  • Chores and rewards

Chores with pictures and optional points, and real-life rewards a guardian names, like a movie night. No money and nothing to buy.

  • Badges and goals

Badges for reading, learning, making and helping, never for screen time, and goals a guardian can set.

  • Daily family challenges

A new family Sudoku, Word Search, Math Facts challenge, chess puzzle and word of the day, the same for everyone, with a "Done today" list of who in the circle finished.

  • Families you know

Connect with a family you know, like cousins or godparents, when the guardians of both families say yes. Even then, a person joins a child's circle only when invited.

For grandparents

  • Simple view

Bigger words and buttons, and each grandchild with Message, Play a game, Read together and See drawings they shared, plus a short "Help, I'm stuck" guide.

  • Game night from far away

Play checkers, cards or word games with the grandkids, each on their own phone or tablet, or write a story together one page at a time.

Learning

  • Learning games

Math facts, typing, geography and flags, spelling, new words, coding and letter tracing, with practice at their own pace and races only against their own best.

  • Learn Spanish with Dora

Picture words for little ones, themed units, sentences and dialogs for kids, travel talk and verbs for teens, short stories and a daily family word.

  • Chess lessons and puzzles

Short lessons, a puzzle trainer by level and a friendly Teacher that looks at each move and shows better ideas.

  • Tap a word to learn it

In an English book, press on a word and a small card says what it means in words that fit their age, and Hazel says it. Reading streaks and a weekly goal too.

In Spanish

  • The whole app in English or Spanish

A grown-up chooses English or Spanish for each person in the family. The guides and help come in both.

  • Books read by Dora

Books in Spanish on their own shelf, read aloud by Dora, our Latin American Spanish voice.

Phones, tablets and no signal

  • iPhone, iPad, Android and computers

No app store needed: add it to the home screen from the browser and it opens like any other app. On iPhone and iPad, add it from Safari so notifications work.

  • Made for weak signals

Games against the computer or a friend, puzzles, music, notebook pages and books they have opened keep working without internet.

  • Save for a trip

Choose books to keep on a device, with their pictures, before a long drive or a flight.

  • Easy sign-in for small hands

A guardian sets up a tablet once with a code, a QR code or a printed sign-in card. Kids never need a password.

Accessibility

  • Screen readers and keyboards

Works with VoiceOver and TalkBack: buttons have spoken names and games say each move in words. Game boards can be played with the arrow keys.

  • Big buttons and zoom

Buttons big enough for small fingers, and screens that still work at twice the text size.

  • Easier reading

Bigger text, easier spacing, day, sepia or night pages, and read-aloud that lights up each sentence.

  • A look for each age

Big picture tiles for little ones, brighter screens for kids and calm lists for teens.

Family setup

  • By invitation only

Right now we welcome families by invitation. A family's guardians add their kids, invite the people they trust and choose who goes in each child's circle.

  • Set up your family, step by step

After the invitation, a short guide for the first guardian: the kids, the other parent, grandparents and trusted grown-ups, how OllyOlly works for your family, and a printable sign-in card for each child's device. Kids get a short tour the first time.

  • Report a problem

Grown-ups can tell us about a problem from Settings or any help page, with a picture of the screen if they like, and we answer in the app.

  • What we can see

Today our administrator welcomes each family and can see accounts, circles, settings and safety alerts, to keep every child safe. The administrator reads a child's messages only if that child has no guardian set up yet. Our Privacy Policy explains it.

OllyOlly is a private family clubhouse for kids 3 to 17, where each family's space is its own and only the people a family invites can reach its kids. See how it works.
